Commercial Backup Batteries
Losing power at your business can cost you thousands in lost customers, spoiled stock, potential damages, and more. Ensuring your power stays on no matter what brings you peace of mind, and can be a smart long-term financial decision. Cromwell installs battery energy storage systems (BESS) for businesses in Kansas, Missouri, and beyond that switch on seamlessly to deliver hours of power in the event of a blackout.
New tax incentives can significantly lower the cost of installing a backup battery system — by 30% or more — making now the right time to consider adding backup power to your business. If your utility uses time-of-use metering, batteries can also help you save money by allowing you to buy power when it is cheapest and use it when rates are higher. Cromwell’s experienced teams include licensed electricians and installers certified for major battery brands — we can install a backup battery system to meet your needs, whatever they are.

Cromwell Solar: Backed Up By Battery Systems
Due to aging infrastructure coupled with the strains of more extreme weather conditions, power outages are occurring more than twice as often as they used to. A great example of using a battery system for continuous power can be found at our own Cromwell Solar headquarters in Lawrence, Kansas. Our office and warehouse use three Tesla Powerwalls to provide a steady backup in case of outages. When our power goes out, the lights barely flicker and our computers stay on — saving what we’re working on — while the bank next door has to shut down until the power is restored.
The installation of Tesla Powerwalls in 2019 at the Cromwell Solar headquarters was one of the first commercial Powerwall installations in the world. Long known for innovation, Cromwell Solar also had the distinction of installing the very first Tesla Powerwall residential system outside of California in 2018. Today, we install a large range of battery brands and types, including Generac PWRcell, Panasonic Evervolt, Sol-Ark, and Enphase, with solutions for businesses ranging from small offices to large factories and even utilities.
Commercial Battery Backup Advantages
Like a standby generator, a battery energy storage system at your business keeps the power flowing even during an outage. Compared to generators, battery backup systems are much quieter and have less space requirements — and without issues related to exhaust BESS can be installed indoors or out, need no regular maintenance, and switch on seamlessly, with no loss of power. Having continuous power keeps your business running and can avoid losses like spoilage, missed client opportunities, lost computer work, waste from restarting production line, and shorter equipment life as hard stops and starts damage computers and manufacturing equipment.
For many industrial customers a significant part of their electric bill is the demand charge, which is the maximum amount of power the facility consumes over a 15-minute period. When a plant is powered on, all the equipment simultaneously draws power, often resulting in a very high demand for a very limited amount of time which can cause very high bills. An appropriately-sized BESS can be used at startup to spread out the load, lowering the amount you are taking from the grid and avoiding high demand charges.
Another advantage of a commercial battery backup is helping to improve the quality of the electricity you use. Not all power is created equal: power factor issues (the ratio of working power to apparent power) from both your utility and equipment can cause you to consume more energy than necessary and can rapidly wear out expensive pumps and electronics. A battery energy storage system can smooth out voltage fluctuations to improve your power factor, saving energy and prolonging the life of equipment wired or plugged into your building power.

Cost of a Battery Backup for Businesses
The cost of installing a battery energy storage system for your business depends on the size of the battery storage needed, the type of power feeding your facility, how extensive wiring/rewiring will be, and many other factors. Helping the cost greatly in 2024 are federal incentives as part of the Inflation Reduction Act that cover 30% or more of the cost of installing a battery system for your business — with or without solar panels (solar installation was previously required to receive the tax credit). Cromwell is very familiar with the process of applying for and receiving these tax credits, and we can help you get incentives you deserve.

Your Commercial Battery Backup Specialists
Installing a battery system integrated with solar panels or generators is something that is beyond the technical scope of most solar installers or electricians. But large-scale commercial projects are something Cromwell excels at. Our teams are staffed with licensed electricians with years of experience designing and installing the full range of backup battery systems.
Having the experts at Cromwell install your battery backup system prepares your facility for the future. We are one of very few firms capable of integrating battery systems with generators and solar energy. Even if you are not ready for solar or generators to create your own microgrid today, we will make sure that your battery energy storage system (BESS) is ready for this in the future. Cromwell Solar is happy to add battery backup functionality to any existing solar project (sometimes requiring some modifications), whether we initially installed it or not.
